Principal of the Matter: Fall 2010-2011
I would like to welcome everyone back to another great year at Arlington High School. Further, greetings are extended to our Freshman Class of 2014. I know that you will find AHS filled with opportunities to develop previous interests and discover new ones. Returning 10th and 11th grade students should work to make the most of every day. To our Senior Class, the class of 2011, I would like to encourage you to work closely with Ms. Fletcher and Ms. Chisum to insure that you will be set to graduate and have a smooth transition to the next phase of your life. Also, Seniors, please remember the ancient axiom “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded”. (Jesus, 31 AD). To the seniors, finally, I would remind you that you are to represent the finest aspects of our school.
This year will be filled with some changes, as our freshmen and sophomore classes will both be required to meet the demands of the “Tennessee Diploma Project http://www.tennessee.gov/education/TDP
In addition, President Obama’s educational initiative “Race to the Top”
http://www2.ed.gov/news/pressreleases/2010/03/03292010.html will mean some changes such as a 7 period day and placing greater demands on teachers and students.
I would like to assure everyone at AHS that we are ready to meet these demands and will quickly learn to thrive during this period of change. One thing that I have learned in my 29 years in public education is that programs come and go, but striving for success must always be our goal.
While it is true that we all certainly enjoy one of the most beautiful and well-maintained campuses in Shelby County Schools, the key to a great school is the people in the school. Great teachers, students and parents will be the keys that will keep AHS on top. I look forward to working with each and every one of you as we work together to make the 2010-2011 our best year yet!
