Dear Arlington High Band Students and Band Boosters,

Welcome to the Arlington High School Band Family and congratulations on your decision to be a part of one of the finest organizations in this area. We have already begun setting our traditions and standards for this program that you are a part of. I am excited to be a part of a program that has such a strong support of students and parents. The 2009-2010 school year will give us the opportunity to continue on our quest for excellence. The Arlington High School Band provides musical activities that encompass a wide scope and allows everyone a chance to reach the highest possible level of success.

While the musical activities are the core of our program, the total band experience provides the student far more opportunities. During the year, the student will be able to participate in leadership development programs; learn and apply planning, team-building skills, respecting others, and working through situations for a common goal.

The fall season emphasizes the excellence of our Marching Band. Our performances include home football games and several marching competitions. Continue developing a Winter Guard and Winter Drum Line program for the Spring. These programs offer activities involving small groups of students. Both groups will travel to compete in local and regional competitions.  Our Jazz Band will continue to develop into a vital part of our band program, another opportunity for students to develop their individual skills as a musician. In addition, members of the Arlington High Band also distinguish themselves through individual efforts in All-State auditions, All-West auditions, Solo and Ensemble Festival and other Honor Band activities. The main focus of our entire program will continue to be the Concert Band; this carries through all the other ensembles we offer at Arlington High School.

The Arlington High Band program is striving for excellence through dedication, learning, experience, and a team effort from students, boosters, and staff.  The 2009-2010 year looks to be an exciting opportunity on which to build a proud legacy.  It is also important to note that one side benefit to the total band experience is the fun and lasting relationships and memories that are developed by both students and parents. Our senior class will continue the trend of our proud legacy through their dedication, hard work, and commitment to the needs of the group.

Hard-working students, dedicated staff, involved and active parents, and a supportive administration and community all combine to make it possible for the Arlington High Band Program to offer an outstanding array of musical opportunities. Our students are expected to set and reach high goals for themselves and their program, and the rewards of meeting those expectations are immeasurable. Members of the Arlington High School Band develop musically, emotionally, mentally, and socially.

This handbook is intended to guide students, parents, administrators, staff, and director as a convenient source of information regarding the varied aspects of the Arlington High Band. We have tried to cover as thoroughly as possible every facet of the program. Students and parents should read this handbook carefully. Band members and parents will be expected to understand and abide by all rules and regulations set forth in this book.

Sincerely,

Phillip Hughes
